Herschel Lentz, age 102, passed away at Gentry Senior Living on Sunday, January 28, 2018. He was a lifelong resident of Monroe County. Herschel was born on October 1, 1915 to Roy and Josephine (Young) Lentz in Monroe County. Herschel was the oldest of four children.
He married Evelyn (Sargent) Lentz on November 20, 1941. They were married for 76 years. They were the oldest members of First United Church, (formerly First Baptist Church) where they were married. Herschel graduated from Bloomington High School in 1934. He was the first Lentz to graduate from Bloomington High School. He was active in the orchestra, playing the cello while there. He attended a radio technology school in Chicago after graduating from high school.
He and Evelyn met while he was a soda jerk at Stout's Pharmacy in downtown Bloomington. He later worked as a supervisor at RCA and Tarzians. He retired from Indiana University in 1980 as the electron microscope technologist in the Botany Department.
Herschel was survived by one day by his loving wife of 76 years, Evelyn. He is survived by a daughter, Sharon Schnier (Bob) of Columbus, son, Dick Lentz (Ginger) of Brownsburg, five grandchildren, Stacie Woodward (Will), Adam Schnier (Ashley), Brian Lentz, Amy Schneider (Chris), and Todd Lentz, eight great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, one cousin, Nancy Busenbark, and a sister, Dorothy (Lentz) Heavin of Atlanta.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Louise Mosier (Bud), brother, Donald Lentz (Pat), and one niece.
Herschel was always active in Boy Scouts, amateur radio, computers, traveling, camping, gardening, Bible study groups, and other activities at his church.
He always loved to make people smile and laugh with his wit, humor, and tricks. He and his brother, Donald, always tried to create a unique Christmas gift for the Lentz Christmas that always amazed their family and made them laugh.

Evelyn (Sargent) Lentz, age 97, passed away Monday, January 29, 2018 at Gentry Senor Living in Bloomington, Indiana. She was born on July 30, 1920 in Martin County, Indiana to John and Sallie Sargent, the second youngest of nine children.
She married Herschel Lentz at the First Baptist Church in Bloomington on November 20, 1941. They were married for 76 happy years and wanted to go to Heaven together. God granted their wish.
Evelyn came to Bloomington after graduating from Burns City High School in 1939. She cooked and cleaned for the Woolery Stone Company's family. She was one of the first groups of women to be hired at RCA. She later worked for food service for Monroe County schools at Rogers and Binford. She was a receptionist for Dr. Otto Rogers and retired in 1980 as a receptionist at Dr. Glen Ley's office.
Evelyn is known for her delicious pies and meals. She loved to cook. She also loved gardening, helping others, camping, traveling, and her grandchildren.
Evelyn is survived by her children, Sharon Schnier (Bob) of Columbus and Dick Lentz (Ginger) of Brownsburg, five grandchildren, Stacie Woodward (Will), Adam Schnier (Ashley), Brian Lentz, Amy Schneider (Chris), Todd Lentz, eight great-grandchildren, sister, Omadeen (Sargent) Stuckey of Indianapolis, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 76 years, Herschel, by one day. God granted their wish to go together. She was also preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Ernest, Donald, Flavil, and Leland Sargent, sisters, Farel Stickels and Joyce Albright, nephews, and a niece.

Calling hours will be on Saturday, February 3, 2018 from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at the First United Church, 2420 E. Third Street, Bloomington, Indiana 47401, with the service to immediately follow.
There will be a private burial.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Church.
