Obituary for Charlie Henry
Our beloved Charlie Theron Henry died suddenly on Sunday, March 24 at age 69 in the beautiful Bloomington home he had spent many years restoring for his family.
Charlie fell in love with the Monroe County countryside and moved to Bloomington in 1976. He bought a house in need of major restoration on nine acres of land. He was a former student of architecture who loved to build and evolve things, and his home became his canvas. He restored and expanded it over many years, mostly with his own hands. Charlie arrived in Bloomington as a subsistence farmer and became a knowledgeable construction materials manager who, through years of hard work and prudent financial planning, provided stability, a good quality of life, and a lovely home for his family. His work ethic throughout his life was as big as his heart.
He was born in Houston, Texas, on June 25, 1949. There he met his high school sweetheart, Nancy. They kept in touch ever since and finally married in 2001. To all who knew them as a couple, it was clear they were the love of each other’s lives. They were grateful for their love story, the long drives they took in the MG British sports cars Charlie loved, the traveling and adventures they shared in their retirement, their sweet dog Blue, and every moment they spent together.
Charlie was committed to serving the Bloomington community. Most recently, he became a beloved volunteer of over 5,000 hours at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. He was a longtime member, past president, and Rotarian of the year for the Bloomington North Rotary Club, where he supported the causes of clean water and polio prevention worldwide. And he was a board member and past president of the Bloomington YMCA. Charlie was also an organ donor. In death, his body will be used to help others, as he did in life.
Above all, Charlie had a big heart full of love, and he was loved dearly for it. He will be greatly missed and will always live on in the hearts of his wife Nancy Henry, mother Diane Dormant, brother Julian Henry and his wife Nona Farris, son Chama Henry and his wife Rachel, son Zach Henry and his wife Elizabeth, granddaughter Roxy Henry, and all who knew him.
A celebration of Charlie’s life will be held at 2:00 on Saturday, March 30 in the Olcott Room of the Monroe County Convention Center. All are welcome to attend. To honor his life and offer condolences, please consider donating to Habitat for Humanity.
