Robert Philip "Phil" Thompson
Robert Philip “Phil” Thompson, 76, of Bloomington passed away Sunday, September 25, 2016 at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born, April 24, 1940 in Bloomington, he was the son of the late Robert and Amy (Wampler) Thompson.
Phil was a veteran of the United States Army and he was the founder of Hoosierscare, an organization providing housing for cancer patients and their families while receiving treatment in Bloomington.
He retired as Operations Manager at the Indiana University Cyclotron and he was employed at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, where he was also a member.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Helen (Howard) Thompson, one son, Brad Thompson (Cindy), one daughter, Natalie Cochren, six grandchildren, William Thompson, Mariquita Thompson, Cameron Cochren, Jackson Cochren, Bo Cochren of Bloomington, Kaiti Cochren of Evansville, two sisters, Beverly Petry and Donna Thompson of Bloomington, and Betty Ely (Jay) of Bloomington who grew up in the Thompson home and was just like a sister to Phil. Also surviving is his niece, Amy Lanham (Jason) of Ellettsville, sister-in-law, Barbara Stephens and her children, Lori Lentz, Mike Stephens and Don Stephens and brother-in-law, Chris Howard.
A Celebration of Life will be 2:00pm Thursday, September 29, 2016 at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, 2700 E. Rogers Rd. Bloomington, IN 47401, Tom Ellsworth will officiate. The family will receive friends from 12-2pm Thursday at the church.
The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. in Bloomington is handling arrangements.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Olcott Cancer Center, 619 W. First St. Bloomington, IN 47403 or to Sherwood Oaks Christian Church.
