Obituary for Gary James Clendening

Gary James Clendening
Gary James Clendening, an attorney whose career spanned 47 years, died Wednesday, November 16th. He was at his home in Bloomington with his loving wife, Carol Vogel Clendening. The cause was complications from Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. He was 72 years old.

Mr. Clendening was born in Fresno, California but grew up in Bloomington where he attended Bloomington High School and then Indiana University. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and received his Juris Doctor from Indiana University in 1968. He was a well-respected defense litigator, who was a past president of the Defense Trial Council of Indiana, named to The Best Lawyers in America, and was selected as a Super Lawyer for medical malpractice defense for 11 years in a row.

In recent years, he and his wife of 19 years, Carol Vogel Clendening, spent time traveling and learning about the world. He retired in October, 2015, after which he delighted in reading, playing catch and visiting with his grandchildren, and spending time with his wife.

Until he was physically unable to, he played tennis as often as he could, sometimes daily. His friendships were important to him; he loved talking with and learning from friends with a wide range of expertise. He could get along with anybody, and made people feel welcome and comfortable.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and James Clendening, and his brothers, Keith and Bruce Clendening. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Carol Vogel Clendening, his daughters Amy Clendening Makice and Megan Clendening, his stepsons Ryan, David, and Nick Baker, and eight grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky.
A Remembrance of Gary James Clendening will be held at Franklin Hall 601 E. Kirkwood Bloomington, on December 3rd at 1:00 pm.
