Obituary for
Jean Ruth Nitz
Jean Nitz, 85 years young, was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who transitioned to be with her God on March 4, 2017. She was a 20 year resident of Saint Ignace, MI and recently resided in Bloomington, IN in an assisted living home.
A lifelong learner and avid reader, she enjoyed painting, coloring books, music and all the activities at Better Day Club. She loved plays, musicals, concerts and the great outdoors. Food was practically a hobby and she would base her experience at an event on the type and quality of the meal served. It was a wonder she was never overweight. Jean was quick with a one-liner that would catch one off guard and crack everyone up. She was full of life and laughter with gratitude and appreciation of others.
She was married to Robert H. Nitz who preceded her in death in 2000. She has three children, Laurie Eynon, JulieAnne Nitz-Weiss (Mark Weiss), and Gary Nitz, a former daughter-in-law Kimberly Nowack, and grandchildren Alissa and Jared Weiss and Angela Nowack. She also has a sister Maxine Lillie, brother in-law Albert Schumann, and deceased siblings William Kolke, Elaine Schumann and brother in-law Robert Lillie.
She was born January 2, 1932 in Portland, OR and was proud to be on Oregonian and later a Michigander (but never a Hoosier). She attended Valparaiso University where she met and married Robert in 1952. While being a full time mom she received her Bachelors in Education from Kent State University in 1972 and her Masters in Education from Western Michigan University in 1976. She taught language arts to seventh and eighth grade students at Gobles School District in MI. She retired in 1994 and relocated from Kalamazoo to Saint Ignace with Robert.
She was a board member of the Saint Ignace Library, and a volunteer at Gros Cap School, the food bank, blood drives, the hospital and pretty much any opportunity or anything she was asked to do. A true teacher, she lead life by example. She will be missed.
A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, March 25 at 3 pm with a receiving of friends and family from 1-3 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third Street, Bloomington, Indiana 47401. A second celebration will be held in Saint Ignace late spring, date and location to be announced. Gifts commemorating her life may be given to the Better Day Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 282, Ellettsville, Indiana 47429, and/or the Friends of the St. Ignace Public Library.
