Obituary for Gary "Bruce" Johnson

Gary “Bruce” Johnson, 67, of Bloomington passed away July 16 at IU Health Hospice after a very short illness. Born July 25, 1949, in Crawfordsville, IN, he was the son of Max and Bertha Johnson. Bruce studied Graphic Design at the University of Cincinnati and Basel, Switzerland and was a graphic designer in NYC for 20 years. Changing careers, he moved to North Carolina to work in window treatment installations. In 2005 he was an innocent victim of a traffic accident and suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury. In 2008, Bruce relocated to Bloomington, IN. Even with his catastrophic brain injury, he was able to live a fairly independent life.

Bruce was an energetic and inspiring spirit and lived life as an adventure. He had traveled the world, living for periods on several continents, biking in China and through Finland, hopping trains to the west, camping and canoeing in the Adirondacks and enjoying New York City and its boundaries.

Bruce is survived by his sister Judy Crandall (Jack), step-sisters Susie Achenbach (Ralph) and Martha Gooldy, and step-brother John Gooldy, step-nieces, step-nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. in Bloomington. Bruce wished to be cremated, and a celebration of his life will be planned at a later date. Donations may be made to The Cancer Research Institute or the Brain Injury Association of Indiana.
Grateful thanks to the IU Hospice House for their extraordinary care and compassion.
