Obituary for Joseph "Joe" Davis

Joseph Ned "Joe" Davis, loving father and husband, age 91, was called home to spend eternity with his Heavenly Father. Joe passed away at IU Health Hospice House in Bloomington, Indiana on November 6, 2017. He was born on March 25, 1926 in Bloomington to Sylvester and Alice (Cirgin) Davis. Joe was a lifelong resident of Bloomington. He married his childhood sweetheart, Lois (Patton) Davis and they shared a 65 year marriage before she passed away.
Joe enlisted in the U.S. Navy to serve in World War II, where he was a crew member on a PT boat in the south Pacific and earned a Purple Heart as the result of an injury he incurred. Joe owned and operated a shoe repair business with his brother in the 1950s, located at the corner of Kirkwood and Washington Streets. After selling the business, Joe went to work for the Postal Service and worked as a letter carrier for more than 20 years.
Joe was a member of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, the NAARFE, American Legion, Masonic Lodge F.A.M., and a 40 year member of the Chambersville Cemetery Board.
Joe is survived by his daughters, Michelane Spanburg (Chris) of Brownsburg, Indiana and Patricia Jo Thomas of Bloomington, grandchildren, Andrew Stoute, Niki (Jim) Sutton, Alicia (Eric) Hidalgo and Tim (Misty) Spanburg, six great-grandchildren, Jimmy, Abby, and Kyle Sutton, and Isaiah, Micah, and Abel Spanburg.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Lois Davis, parents, brothers, John, Jack, and Junior Davis, and sisters, Gaynell Eads and Lenora Kennedy.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third Street, Bloomington, Indiana 47401.
A funeral service for Joe will be at 11:00 am on Friday, November 10, 2017 at The Funeral Chapel. Tim Spanburg will officiate and burial will follow at Chambersville Cemetery in Owen County, Indiana.
Memorial contributions can be made to Sherwood Oaks Christian Church in Joe's name.
