Philip Richard Carter
Philip Richard Carter, 88, of Bloomington, passed away March 9th, 2018. Born September 21st, 1929, he was the son of Oren Carter and Mary Mildred (Brickey) Gillaspie.
Phil graduated from Union Township High School in Johnson County. He attended Lane Business College where he studied to be a CPA. He was a local insurance agent for American Family Insurance, and did so until his retirement. Phil was a U.S. Navy veteran and served during the Korean War aboard the Battleship New Jersey.
Phil loved to fish, but his great passion was golf. He loved to play golf with all of his golfing buddies at Cascades and Martinsville Country Club. He won a Super Senior City Championship at Cascades. During his golfing career he hit several holes-in-one.
Phil is survived by his longtime companion Donna Shields, of Bloomington; daughter Tina Carter (Tama Woosley), of New Albany; son Tom Carter (Cindy), of Cartersville, GA; step-daughter Cherie (Mike) Wilson, of Bloomington; step-son Jeff Shields, of Bloomington; former wife Leona (Smith) Carter, of Martinsville; brother Joe Carter, of Indianapolis; and many, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents James Rolland Brickey and Alta Bell (Walker) Brickey; sister-in-law Ramona Carter; and niece Sally Jo Gillum.
Visitation for Phil will be held from 4-8pm Tuesday, March 13th, 2018, at The Funeral Chapel of Powell & Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. in Bloomington. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 14th at 12pm (tee-time) at The Funeral Chapel with an hour of calling prior to the service. Burial will follow at Nineveh Christian Church Cemetery with a committal service at 2:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Phil's memory may be made to Meals on Wheels, or a charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at IU Health Bloomington Hospital for the kindness and compassion given to Phil while keeping him comfortable, and making the family's feelings a top priority. Special thanks to Dr. Bradley Erickson and Chaplain Elizabeth Price for keeping us informed and comforted.
