Obituary for David Perry Hayes

David Perry Hayes, 95 of Bloomington, passed away Saturday July 14, 2018 at the IU Health Bloomington Hospital Hospice House surrounded by his family.
David was born February 8, 1923 in Monroe County and was the son of the late Curtis and Minnie Rachel (Robertson) Hayes.
David was a farmer and drove a school bus for MCCSC for 35 yrs. He had also worked at the Monroe County Sheriff's Department in the early 60's under Clifford Kinser. In 1971 he was elected Van Buren Township Trustee and while Trustee he helped start the Van Buren Fire Department.
David was an avid hunter and horseback rider and was an Army Veteran of World War II and a member of Burgoon Baptist Church. He was a previous member of the American Legion. He was proud of time spent in the Service, proud of his country but his greatest source of pride was being a husband, father and grandfather. David loved to sing "God Bless America" and often said there wasn't anything in life he wanted to do that he didn't accomplish. In his words, "We've had a great life".
Survivors include three daughters, Marsha McMurry (Tom) of Bloomington, Mickey Duncan (Roger) of Bedford and Mary Jo Ricks of Bloomington, one son John D. Hayes (Stacy) of Bloomington, 8 grandchildren; Annette Nunn, Tommie Jo Allen, Carie Ann Zaiser, Jeremy Pitman, Chelsea Ann Hayes, Mason David Hayes, Dylan Curtis Hayes, and Wilson Perry Hayes, seven great-grandchildren, Sam, Zach, Rachel, Kylan, Asa, Hannah and Whitney.
David was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Doris E. (Richardson) Hayes in 2016, his parents Curtis and Minnie Hayes, 5 sisters; Oma Owen, Opha Kinser, Olive Chambers, Opal Wilson and Josephine Frame and his brother Lenzy Hayes.
Visitation will be Tuesday July 17, 2018 from 4-8 pm at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. Blooomington, IN.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Wednesday July 18, 2018 at Burgoon Baptist Church with Pastor Harold Godsey officiating. Burial will follow at Burgoon Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in David's memory to Burgoon Baptist Church.
