Obituary for Lucille Unger

Lucille Unger died June 3 after a brief period of declining health. She was born in 1915 in Evanston, Ill., to Ann and Norman Brenner. She spent her childhood and teen years in Chicago and Kenilworth,Ill., and then attended Rockford College and the University of Wisconsin where she met her future spouse, Irvin Unger, to whom she was married for 50 years until his death in 1987. She was the sister of Nathan and Louis, both deceased, and is survived by her children: William (Margaret) of Madison, Wis., Betty (Charles) of Bloomington, Ind., and Jeffry (Mary) of Urbana, Ill.; grandchildren: Megan, Mathew, Katharine, Elizabeth, Samuel, and Joseph; and great-grandchildren: Zachary, Eliana, and Lila, born June 1, 2010. She also leaves behind Donna Drucker, the granddaughter of her closest childhood friend, cousin, and college roommate. After her marriage Lucille lived in Milwaukee until 1972 and was active in charitable work. She was a past president of the Milwaukee chapter of ORT, which provided rehabilitation and training services to refugees from Europe and elsewhere; a scout leader, member of Hadassah, and worked for the Milwaukee Symphony helping raise support and also developing a program to introduce symphonic music into the elementary schools. In 1972 she moved to San Diego, where she lived until 1986 when she moved to Bloomington, Ind. to be closer to family and to care for her mother. Lucille worked in the advertising departments of the Milwaukee Journal, the San Diego Union-Tribune, and the Bloomington Herald-Times. Her interests and avocations were varied and included horses in her youth, golf, piano, needlepoint, bridge, tennis, and dogs. Lucille was a kind and understanding parent and grandparent; a devoted daughter and wife; and a loyal and compassionate friend who could be counted on in times of need. The date of the memorial service will be announced. Contributions may be sent to the Monroe County Humane Association or to the charity of the donor's choice.
