Obituary for Mary Jane Lavender Humphrey

Mary Jane (Lavender) Humphrey, born May 3, 1927, to Flossie O. and Frank T. Raper in Brazil, Indiana, died unexpectedly in her home at Brookdale Senior Living Bloomington on Wednesday, November 21, 2018.

Jane retired from her administrative position at the Indiana State Police, Bloomington Post with 30 years of service. She was a published poet, prolific artist, global traveler, and comfort food gourmet. Jane was a long-time member of Fairview Methodist Church and the Charm ‘n Chatter Club.

Survivors include her son Michael (Bonnie) Lavender, granddaughter Sara Lavender (Sam) Gibson, great grandchildren Joshua Gibson and Abigail Gibson, all of Bloomington; Samantha Gibson, Indianapolis; sister Bonnie Lou Lavender, Bloomington; brother Jack (Roberta) Raper, Beaumont, California; step-children Donnia (Junior) Freeman and Loettea Rush, Bloomington; Tom (Mary) Weaver, Callaway, Florida; Kathy (Frank) Perkins, Henderson, NC; niece Judy Lavender Boruff; nephew Bill (Sue)Lavender, both from Bloomington and numerous other nieces and nephews throughout the country and a large extended family.

She was preceded in death by her first husband Jack Lavender (1974), second husband James Humphrey (1992), son Roger Lavender (2018); brothers Bill, Richard, and Tom Raper.

Special thanks to the staff and caregivers at Brookdale Senior Living Bloomington where Jane resided for nearly 10 years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Friends may make donations to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America 322 8th Ave., 7th Floor, NY, NY 10001 or to any elder care charity of their choice.

Visitation will be Monday, November 26, at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. 3rd Street, Bloomington, from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., preceding a private family service.
