Obituary for Richard L. "Dick" Koons

Print
Richard L. "Dick" Koons, 86, of Bloomington passed away Friday, January 4, 2019 at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born, April 19, 1932 in Bloomington, he was the son of the late Oliver Wendell and Francis Ione (Knapp) Koons.
Richard "Dickie" as his family called him, or "Dick" also went by several other names over the years. "Bulldog" when he drove a truck for Hanna Trucking which he did before, during, and after the 32 years he worked for RCA. Another group called him "LeRoy." He let people know what he thought and sometimes not in a nice way so he was also called "Grumpy". His children and grandchildren called him "Papaw."
Dick joined the U.S. Army in 1948 and served as a Morse Code radio operator during the Korean War. After returning home in 1952 from service he was active at the Bloomington Speedway as the Pit Steward for several years. He enjoyed sprint cars and any old car was a joy for him to see.
Later in life he enjoyed working in the yard and garden, as well as tinkering in the garage. Richard and Paula also enjoyed having family and friends over for spur of the moment cookouts.
Survivors include his wife, Pauletta "Paula" Koons, brother, Terry C. Koons (Karen), daughter-in-law, Kimberly Koons, grandson, Larry Justin "L.J." Koons, step-daughter Melisa Lee Tapp, and grandchildren, Steven Joe McAuley, (Monica), Jonathan Michael Crouch (Jessica), Grace Olivia Simpson, Jacob Freeman Simpson, and Isaac Lee Simpson, great-grandchildren, Marissa Lou McAuley, Stormy Marie McAuley, Joseph Richard McAuley, and Avalyn Hill, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by son, Larry Lee Koons, brothers, Wendall Loren Koons, and James W. Koons, sisters, Vanita Rose Koons, and Evelyn Louise Koons, and stepmother, Louie Edith (Flowers) Koons.
Funeral services will be 1:00pm Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. in Bloomington. Pastor Tom Wiggs will officiate. Entombment will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be 11am-1pm Wednesday at The Funeral Chapel.
Dick served with the Monroe County Veteran's Honor Guard, and they will provide military rites at Valhalla Memory Gardens Wednesday.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Legion Post #18 in Richard's memory.
