Obituary for Ann F. (Funston) Damon
The heavens gained an angel as our precious mother passed unexpectedly from this earth on Monday, January 7, 2019 at IU Health Hospital.
Ann Lucille (Funston) Damon was born on September 20, 1927 to Elmer and Lucille (Trask) Funston in Bismarck, ND, the second oldest of nine children and the oldest girl. Ann graduated from the University of Sioux Falls in South Dakota with a BA in Sociology and Psychology. While attending college, she met fellow student and future husband, Thornton "Bud" Damon. They married on April 9, 1950 and remained married almost 55 years until his death on February 16, 2005.
After marrying, the Damons moved to Bloomington for Bud to attend Indiana University. Ann worked as a secretary to Dr. Holland, in the Economics department at IU and in the Advocates Office. Her time in the Advocates office was most enjoyable to her as she was able to work with retired professors and students. Ann was an Avon lady for 10 years and a member of their President's club for top sales. She enjoyed going door to door and visiting with neighbors. She loved to garden and tend to her flowers and made delicious jams, pickles and flower bouquets from her gardens. Her blue ribbon apple pie and banana bread were her specialty. In her early days in Bloomington, Ann was a member of the Home Demonstration Club, First Baptist church where she taught Sunday school and was on the building committee and attended McDoel and Emmanuel Baptist Churches. She was a 35 year member of University Baptist Church where she was the first woman deacon of the church, a Sunday school teacher, volunteer secretary, pastoral search committee member, chairman of the social committee and on the grounds committee where she tended the flower beds with love. Her most favored role was that of the cookie lady, as she was known to the children for having cookies and lemonade for them every Sunday morning. Her love of God was exemplified by her love, dedication and service to her family, church and friends. No one could have asked for a better mother and friend.
Ann is survived by her children Thornton "Thorn" Damon, Jr. (Susan) of Bloomington, Jeffrey "JD" Damon (Cindy) of Nashville, TN and Carole Damon of Bloomington with whom she lived for the last 3.5 years. She is also survived by her siblings Vera Schlichenmayer, Beryl Martin, Rhoda Genzel, Gerald Funston and Lowell Funston. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brother Dwain Funston and sisters Norma Stachowiak and Elaine Ludwig.
The family would like to thank her many caregivers over the last 3.5 years who helped make it possible for Ann to remain at home with her daughter.
Funeral services will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at University Baptist Church 3740 E. Third Street and graveside immediately following at Clear Creek Cemetery. Rev. Annette Hills Briggs will officiate. Viewing is Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at The Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Monroe County Humane Association or Monroe County United Ministries (MCUM) emergency food pantry.
