Obituary for Sharrel L. Boike

Sharrel Boike (born Sharrel Lee Pollard) died early in the morning on December 8, 2018 at the age of 71. As unfathomable as it seemed to all of us, she had been diagnosed with ALS; she had an incredible attitude about the whole thing, and chose to take excellent care of herself, but to forgo any interventions. Everyone who knew her can attest to the fact that she made the most of her last year here in the physical world.
We tried writing an obituary using the standard formula, but it just didn’t feel right. Our amazing mother was anything but standard. Despite the trauma of her early life, she was so dedicated to doing everything she could to make the world a better place, and she made a profoundly positive impact on so many people. It truly feels like we’d have to write a book in order to say what we want to say.
We invite everyone to join us on Saturday, January 26, 2019 for a Celebration of Life at the Tibetan Cultural center,3655 S. Snoddy Rd., Bloomington,IN 47401. There will be an openhouse from 1-4pm, with a short service at 2:00.
If you’d like to bring a written copy of a favorite story, memory, or photo, there will be a table for sharing, and we’ll use these to create an album after the event. If you have something you’d like to share with us (her children) privately, there will also be an envelope available for those items.
Sharrel asked that each guest bring one flower to add to a community bouquet, and then take a different flower home.
In lieu of any additional flowers, we’re collecting monetary donations for The Nest at New Hope to be used for art supplies. When I asked my mother what someone could have done for her as a child growing up in an abusive environment, she said the best thing would have been for her teachers to nurture her creativity. In that spirit, the best thing we could think to do in her honor is to support the creative interests of young children in our community.
