Obituary for Elizabeth Jean Yoder (Brown)
Elizabeth Jean (Brown) Yoder passed away on February 17, 2019, at her home in Bloomington, IN. Betty was born on September 29, 1934, in Washington, DC, the daughter of Irvin Cecil and Helen Elizabeth (White) Brown. She was a 1952 graduate of Northwestern High School, Hyattsville, MD, and received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Maryland. Her life was enriched by work experience at the Library of Congress and teaching English at Prince George’s Community College. She married Neil Richard Yoder July 13, 1968, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, College Park, MD.
Betty was active in American Association of University Women and Girl Scouts, through which she learned more about her communities, in both College Park and Bloomington. After moving with her family to Bloomington in 1983, she actively participated in Hoosier Acres Neighborhood Association, Bloomington Chapter DAR, Wylie House Museum, University Club of Indiana University, and Lydia Prescott Chapter of Colonial Dames 17th Century. Reaching retirement, Betty volunteered at Wylie House, Eskenazi Art Museum, Middleway House, and Meals on Wheels. She was a member of Bloomington Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club. She had an abiding interest in family history and genealogy and helped many people with their research. Her life was enriched by a loving family, cousins, neighbors, and many women she respected for helping others.
Betty is survived by her husband, Neil Richard Yoder of Bloomington; daughters, Karen Elizabeth Ellis and Ruth Alice Brauner (Michael), both of Bloomington; and grandchildren Alex Estelle, Kian James, Mia Yvette and Martin Cy.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Elizabeth’s name may be given to the Episcopal Relief & Development (www.episcopalrelief.org), P.O. Box 7058, Merrifield, VA 22116-7058, or a local nonprofit of choice.
A funeral mass will be scheduled at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bloomington.
The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. in Bloomington is handling arrangements.
