Obituary for Mitchell S. Novit
Mitchell Novit, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away at age 87. Mitchell was born in South Carolina to Samuel and Freda Novit.
His early years through high school were spent in the South Carolina low country. He continued his education in North Carolina. Upon graduation from the University of North Carolina with a BA in English he entered the Air Force and served for three years. He continued his education at the University of Michigan where he earned his MBA and PhD. He met and married Judy and they enjoyed just a few days shy of 60 years together. They raised two children, David and Amy. Mitch’s teaching career began at Indiana University in 1966 at the IU School of Business, now known as the Kelley School. He was a professor in the Department of Management and retired in 1995. Upon retirement he joined the Student Advocates office and volunteered there for the next 13 years. He often said that his work with these students was his most rewarding and important activity in retirement.
Mitch was intrigued by magicians and studied and learned how to perform magic. When the grandchildren visited Bloomington, he entertained them with magic shows. When he visited them at their home, he often packed some cards to take with him to perform for them. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and served as treasurer of the Bloomington Magic Club for many years. He was an avid bicyclist and enjoyed cycling through Monroe County and surrounding areas. His love of reading was forever part of his life. Mitch and Judy were charter members of Congregation Beth Shalom in Bloomington and Mitch has served as President.
Mitch was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Janet and granddaughter, Abby. Survivors include his wife, Judy of Bloomington and children David and wife Susan of TX and Amy and husband Scott of MA. Additional survivors include a brother Robert Novit of South Carolina; four grandchildren Nicole, Brenton, Maya and Sarah plus sisters in law and brothers in law and many nieces and nephews and cousins.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, May 31 at Congregation Beth Shalom at 12 noon and will be followed by burial in Valhalla Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 1 at 8pm at their home for an evening service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Congregation Beth Shalom, the Indiana University Student Advocates Office or the charity of one’s choice.
