Obituary for Richard "Dick" Paul Goddard
Richard “Dick” Paul Goddard, 78, of Bloomington, passed away May 30th at Methodist Hospital. Dick was born on February 2, 1941, in Salineville, Ohio, the son of Paul and Esther (Ferguson) Goddard. He graduated from Salineville High School in 1959 and entered the U.S. Navy.
Dick served eight years as a submarine sonarman traveling to many different countries, which he loved. While based in Hawaii, he met his future wife. After leaving the service, they were married and moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where he graduated from Old Dominion University. After graduation, his family moved to Bloomington where Dick held several positions, his favorite being an insurance salesman specializing in senior citizens insurance supplements. Many of his clients became close friends. Dick was also a gifted mechanic with the ability to fix anything.
He became disabled around 1998 and received a lung transplant November 2, 2004 at Methodist Hospital; he survived 14 ½ years following the transplant.
He was a member of First Assembly of God for many years. He was active in several groups of marble collectors, including Marble Collectors Society of America, and a local group of stamp collectors. He loved fishing, gardening, collecting marbles, telling stories, fixing things, and making people laugh.
Dick is survived by his wife of 51 years, Donna (Davis) Goddard; a son, Christopher Goddard (Jody) of Ellettsville; a daughter, Heather Goddard of Bloomington; three grandsons, Levi Goddard, Justin Goddard, and Brandon Goddard; three nieces, Paulette Miller of Richmond, Virginia; Barbara (Miller) Kraynak of Aubrey, Texas; and Jessi (Davis) Schatzle (Josh) of Murphysboro, Illinois; and three nephews: Nathan Davis (Jennifer) of Qatar; Matthew Davis (Jill) of Holland, Michigan; and Mark Davis of Oolitic; and several great nieces and nephews.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Gilda Miller.
Per Dick’s request, there will be no viewing or traditional funeral. There will be a celebration of his life June 9, 3:00 p.m., at Genesis Church.
