Ronald Eugene Brinegar, 78, of Bloomington, was born in Monroe County on March 8, 1941 to Robert and Edith (Stevens) Brinegar. He passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at his residence surrounded by his family. Ronnie is remembered as a great athlete at Bloomington High School where he earned 11 varsity letters. His favorite coach was Keith Rhodes. Their basketball team went to the state finals in 1960. Ronnie married his high school sweetheart Dee (Deloris Ann Funkhouser) in 1960. They went on to have four wonderful sons, Tony, Mark, Jody and Jay.

We got to know Ron and Dee Brinegar through their son Jay's weekly auctions at Eagle's Landing in Ellettsville. The auction "gallery" was the cafeteria of the former elementary school, and Dee presided over the old school kitchen, serving up delicious home cookin', while Ronnie -- seated in the back row -- ostensibly soldiering through a 1,000-word jigsaw puzzle, was actually keeping a rear-view eye out for bids Jay might not be able to see from the podium.

On our way to Dee's window to order food we invariably stopped by Ron's table, to see how the current puzzle was shaping up, and occasionally put a hand in to push a piece into its allotted place and move the project along. Strategically positioned beside Ron, beneath Dee's window, was the Brinegars' black lab, Jack, who periodically roamed through the aisles of seated auction-goers, panhandling for treats.

In my 70-plus years, I've logged a lot of hours at auctions and known a number of auctioneers and their families, but have never known a closer "auction family" than the Brinegars, with Ron at the helm. He was more like an uncle than an auctioneer's father, and -- with his smiling, twinkling eyes -- will be missed by more people than he could ever have imagined noticed him, seated behind a table of puzzle pieces, marshaling order out of chaos.

With the "regulars" taking their seats at the auction, Ron and Dee opened up their family to include all of us, making the auctions more like weekly family reunions than commercial sales. So, with Ron's passing, we've lost more than an auctioneer's son; we've lost a cousin.

I met NO one in my athletic endeavors who was as skillful as Ron in all sports, or as he was known in high school by the nick name of BANTY.
I think of him often and can still remember him as the quarterback in Football, or leading the panthers basketball team to the final 4, or playing baseball for Nanor. I was proud to have him as a friend. By my friend = Livy.
