Obituary for James B. "Jim" Dunning

Jim Dunning of Bloomington peacefully passed away on Monday, June 15, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family after years of various chronic medical conditions.

He was born September 15, 1943 in Chicago IL to James and Catherine Dunning. In 1958, his Chicago-based baseball team made the Pony League World Series Championships in Pennsylvania. In 1959, he was able to attend the World Series to watch his beloved Chicago White Sox. He played softball for many years here and was inducted into the City of Bloomington Softball Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed bowling and racquetball and was always up for a good game of cards or trip to the horse track or casino with friends. An avid sports fan, he always had a game on the TV or would attend a game in person. He had season IU basketball tickets for many years and would take his kids to the post season basketball team banquets.

He met the love of his life, Gail, at an Illinois Woolworths where he was a manager. They married and were transferred to Bloomington. They had fallen in love with their new hometown, so he moved onto Sears where he worked until retirement.

One of Jim’s greatest passions was being involved in community safety. He began as a volunteer firefighter in Perry Township. Over the years, he served the Perry-Clear Creek Fire Protection District in various capacities.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters, Sara and Mary. He is survived by his loving wife, Gail, of 54 years, their children Lynn (Mike) Kinstler of Greenwood IN, Jim (Kim) Dunning of Bloomington IN, Scott (Anne) Dunning of Brownsburg IN, and 5 grandchildren, Teighlor, Natalie, Brett, Aidan and Meredith.

The Funeral Chapel is handling the cremation and visitation arrangements. Visitation will be on Monday, June 22 from 3 pm to 7 pm at The Funeral Chapel 3000 E. Third St. Bloomingotn. We will be observing gathering restrictions, with masks preferred. A memorial service will be held on a future date.
