Wanda Marie Stephens, 94, of Waycross, GA, born March 19, 1926 to Mary and Emmett Hodge in Bloomington IN, passed away September 24, 2020 at Satilla Hospice House in Waycross GA with family at her side. She was preceded in death by her husband of many years, Clayton Stephens, who died January 8, 1998. She is survived by her three children: Randy Stephens (Linda), Judy Morrow (Michael) and Michael Stephens, seven grandchildren (Tom, Scott, Randi Jo, Ian, Bill, Jacob, and Whitney), nineteen great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and her brother Everett Hodge, 96, of Arizona.
She had a lifelong strong Christian faith. She attended Knightridge church in Bloomington IN and later Truth Tabernacle in GA, after moving to Georgia in her later years to be near her eldest son Joe and his wife Linda.
During World War II, she helped make parachutes for the war effort at Crane Naval Base. She worked at Sarkes Tarzian and Otis Elevator in Bloomington while raising her three children. There was never any doubt that she considered raising her children her primary job in life. In her later years she served as a teaching assistant, helping people obtain their GEDs. In her 80s she served as a personal assistant for both the disabled and the elderly. She was the perfect example of a "helper".
Wanda's biggest legacy was instilling in her children a strong work ethic, tolerance for others, and respect for all people. She had an unconditional love for her family and could always be counted on in times of need.
Wanda made friends easily and was loved by all who had the privilege to know her. She faced life head-on with unwavering patience. She was always calm, never angry. She was fiercely independent. During her final years she loved playing Mexican Train dominoes with her family and watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune nightly. She continued making her famous pumpkin bread for others into her 90s. Hers was a life well-lived in love and service to others.
Burial will be at Mt. Gilead Cemetery in Bloomington at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, October 1, 2020. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in her memory be sent to Satilla Hospice House, 811 Beacon St., Waycross, GA, 31501.
Arrangements are being entrusted by The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard.
