Obituary for Betty M. Mercer

Betty M. Mercer, age 95, of Bloomington, Indiana passed away on November 4, 2020. She was born on July 7, 1925. Her parents were Gracie Mae Skirvin and Edward Mercer.
After the untimely death of her parents, she was reared by her paternal grandparents, Emma and William Mercer. She was a graduate of Smithville High School, and she received a B.S. in Business with distinction and a M.S. in Education from Indiana University. For 38 years she was a secondary school teacher at Smithville, Evansville Bosse, Indianapolis North Central High, Bloomington South, Bloomington North, and University High. For several years, Betty worked part time for the Indiana University Independent Study Division. She was an assistant in the Personnel Department at Indiana University, but she chose to retire to her first career choice of teaching, which she greatly enjoyed. After retirement from teaching, she was a real estate agent in Bloomington for several years.
She was of the Methodist Faith. She was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association, the National Education Association, Beta Gamma Sigma, business honorary, education honorary, and Delta Pi Epsilon, business education honorary. She was a long-time member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Survivors include cousins Dorothy Tompkins, James Scott, Amy Tompkins, Shannon Cochran, Scott Cochran, Jerimiah Burchfield, and Gabriel Cochran.
There will be a private service at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, and burial will be at the Mt. Ebal Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Unity Worldwide Ministries and the Indiana University Foundation.
