Obituary for William R. "Bill" Anderson, MD

Bill died at peace and happy with the life he lived. He was born in Nashville, TN and was raised in his early years (during WWII) in the south and later moved with his family to Clinton, Iowa. Bill graduated from Clinton High School and was valedictorian of his class. He attended the University of Iowa where he received his BS (1955) and his MD (1958) degrees. While at the University of Iowa he was a member of Beta Theta Phi social fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha – all honorary fraternities. Bill interned at Indianapolis General Hospital and then returned to the University of Iowa hospitals for a residency in Women’s Health (OB-GYN). Bill served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp at Ft. Benning, GA. Following his military service, he had a post-doctorate year of OB-GYN Pathology/Electron microcopy at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. The family returned to Iowa City where Bill was on the faculty of the University Hospital. There he taught, did research and was in private practice for five years. In 1970 Dr. Anderson joined Dr. Walter Owens in private practice in Bloomington, IN and continued to do clinical work and teaching with the Indiana University medical program. He enjoyed the practice of Women’s medicine and his new associates until he retired in 2001. He was fortunate to make many friends in both the university and the community. Bill served on boards of the Community Service Council and Middleway House. He was a leader at Bloomington Hospital serving as Chief of Staff and one of the first physicians on the Hospital Board. He took leadership positions in the state ACOG and the Central Association of OB-GYN and related travel groups. After retirement he served on the Bloomington Hospital Foundation Board, did volunteer work at Volunteers In Medicine, the Shalom Center, the Community Gardens and St. Mark’s UMC. In 2019, his years of service to the Bloomington community was recognized with the Impact Local Healthcare Award for The Bloomington Health Foundation. These were important projects for him. He became a Master Gardener and also studied piano. He learned piano and some of the delights of music with his teacher Sandy Hertling. He enjoyed the frustrations and challenges of golf with friends and having time to travel and reading lots of old and new classics was special.
The most enjoyable times were spent with his wife Janet as they enjoyed retirement time together watching their three children and six grandchildren grow, being happy and productive. Bill and Janet were married in 1958 in Warsaw, IN at the Warsaw Presbyterian Church. They shared a lot of moves in their early years with many special memories.
They have three children – Lesa Tieszen (John; children Hannah and Jack), Minneapolis, MN. Mark (Ann Brumleve; children Gabrielle and Quinn), Greeley, CO and Roblyn Brigham (Peter; children Katherine and Jennifer), Arlington, MA, and one sister, Evelyn Glesne. The time in Bloomington was fulfilling for the whole family; special for them all.
In 2014 the Anderson’s moved to Meadowood Retirement Center. This was a happy move with a lot of new and old friendships and activities.
Services will be held at a later date due to COVID-19 restrictions.
