Obituary for Ronald Lee Cowden
Ronald Lee Cowden, 66, of Bloomington passed away December 17, 2020 at Bloomington Hospital from complications of COVID.
Ronald was born December 15, 1954 to Rowena (Hawkins) Cowden and Donald Cowden. Ronald graduated from Bloomington High School South in 1973. He joined the Marine Corp shortly after graduation and proudly served our country. After his discharge from the military, Ron returned to the Bloomington area and was employed as a truck driver for DC Trucking Co. Ronald was in the process of becoming an independent trucker before suffering from paraplegia as a result from a motorcycle accident in 2014.
Ronald was an avid follower of Motor Sports, especially Sprint Car and dirt track racing. He traveled extensively to attend racing events. In his youth Ronald was an accomplished roller skater. You could find him at Western Skate Land on most Saturday nights, occasionally acting as floor guard. Ron also enjoyed listening to music and watching western movies.
Ronald was an only child and is survived by his mother, Rowena Cowden of Bloomington, IN, as well as two aunts, Velma Hamm of Bloomington, IN and Darlene Lovings of Spencer, IN and several cousins.
He is preceded in death by his father Donald Cowden, material grandparents, Olin and Dorothy Hawkins, paternal grandparents, Nellie and Marion Cowden and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation for Ronald will be from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at the Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third Street, Bloomington, Indiana 47401. A private family service will follow with Pastor Brie Lycan officiating. Entombment will be at Valhalla Memory Gardens,
The family would like to extend a thank you to all the staff and medical personnel at Owen Valley Health Campus for the exceptional care Ronald received for the past six and a half years, as well as to Dr. Sameed and the nurses and health care personnel in ICU East at Bloomington Hospital for the care and compassion extended to the family during this trying time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Paralyzed Veterans or Monroe County Veteran's Honor Guard.
