Obituary for Vivian Irene (Galyan) Miller

Vivian Irene (Galyan) Miller, 90, of Bloomington, passed away peacefully at home Monday, December 21, 2020.
Vivian was born at home in Unionville, Indiana, on September 25, 1930, to Clarence Galyan and Alice (Young) Galyan Skinner. She grew up in Unionville, graduating from Unionville High School in 1948. Vivian received her bachelor's degree with high distinction from Indiana University in 1956. The same year, she began teaching for Bloomington High School. She continued her education, earning a Master's Degree in Government in 1964 and a Ph.D. in Government in 1969. During her 40-year teaching career, she educated individuals from many different backgrounds. In addition to Bloomington High School, Vivian taught at IUPUI, Ivy Tech, MCCSC, and Bloomington North High School.
Throughout her life, she was a member and supporter of many different groups and associations. Vivian was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association, the Monroe County Education Association, the Monroe County Retired Teachers Association, and the Retired Bloomington North Teachers Breakfast Group. While able, she was an active member and supporter of the New Unionville Baptist Church and Choir, the Democratic Party, and the Indiana University Alumni Association.
Vivian's love of history drove a desire to travel. She visited many countries abroad and historically significant locations in the United States. She strove to pass this love down to her son's family. Over many summers, Vivian ensured that her grandson (and parents) saw this country's natural beauty, the works of our forefathers (including Washington D.C. twice!), and just about every location with, at least, a small, metal placard dedication.
Vivian is survived by her grandson Justin Miller (Phil Ford), Lebanon, Indiana, sister Joyce (Jerry) Johnson, Bloomington, sister-in-law Donna Galyan, Bloomington, several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Jim Miller, daughter-in-law, Sheri Miller, sister Beatrice Lincicome, brother-in-law Gene Lincicome, brother, Bob Galyan and her beloved dog Rupert.
The family would like to give special thanks to her caregivers: Tammy, Jared, Nedra, Dawn, all of the girls from Home Instead, and the wonderful nurses and volunteers from IU Health Hospice.
The family requests no flowers. Instead, donations may be given to MCCSC Foundation or New Unionville Baptist Church through the Funeral Home.
