Paul F. Hartin, of Bloomington, IN, passed away unexpectedly on the morning of December 22, 2020, at home. Mr. Hartin was born on November 14, 1950, to John Sykes, Sr., and Rita Mae (Miller) Hartin in Oxford, MS. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John S. Hartin, Jr.
On May 5, 1973, he married Susan J. (Harker) at the First United Presbyterian Church in Bloomington. She survives along with a son, Kevin P. Hartin of Bloomington and a daughter, Kathleen (Katie) S. Hartin with fiancé Konstantin Pakhomov of Reston, VA. Also surviving are his sister, Martha Molpus, of Burlington, VT, niece Anna Molpus (Paul Iobst) and their children, Simon and Ian, of Silver Spring, MD.
Paul worked in the MCCSC as a music teacher from 1972 – 1975 and later as an elementary string teacher for over a decade. Paul also owned and managed Ars Nova music store for many years before turning over its management to his son. For the past five years, he worked in various capacities for IU Event Services and took great pleasure in meeting and helping people. From 2004 to 2020, he participated in Hoosiers Outrun Cancer.
Paul was an active musician, playing for many years in the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra and composing several pieces for the orchestra. He also played in the Bloomington Pops Orchestra, the Bloomington Brass Band, with the IU Marching Hundred Alumni Band and, most recently, the Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble. Additionally, he was one of the original TubaSantas.
No visitation is scheduled. A private service will be observed by the family on Saturday, December 26th, with cremation to follow. The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard has been entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Paul’s name to the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra or to the Jane A. Gouker Endowment for the benefit of the MCCSC Elementary String Program. A Celebration of Life service will be held for Paul in 2021 once it is safe to gather.

I am deeply sorry to hear of Paul's sudden death. I knew Paul as the little brother of Martha and a pest to boot. He always had a smile and a quick word. His love of music started young and any who knew him were fortunate indeed. Blessings and prayers for the days ahead as you travel this new path. Catherine Sweeney

Dear Sue and Katie,
I will miss seeing Paul's friendly face at the band events at the farmers' market as well as seeing him directing children's concerts for the MCCSC. Even after all the years since Katie was in my class he always greeted me with his smile. I will miss his presence at events involving music in town. Donna Kinkead

I first met Paul in 1993 at Ars Nova, shortly after moving to Bloomington, while picking up some music for my children. We had a lovely conversation, during which it came out casually that I played the cello. The very next day I received a call from the BSO personnel manager, Pat Kinzer, saying that Paul had told her I was interested in playing, and inviting me to the orchestra retreat a week later at Bradford Woods. I remember asking her "Who is Paul Hartin?" Silly question indeed. One small conversation that bloomed into playing music together for 27 years! Besides the Bloomington Symphony, we worked together on the music library and played in the Bloomington Pops together. The Picnic with the Pops, Christmas with the Pops, and Night in Old Vienna were especially festive with Paul there. I will always remember Paul's joy, his pride in his family, and his genuine care for others. He was a blessing to so many. My prayers are with you Sue, Kevin, and Katie, that you may be comforted knowing what an enormous influence he had on countless individuals. Thank you for sharing him with us.

My deepest condolences to the family. Sue Hartin was my choir director at Brown County Jr./Sr. High School in the 70’s-80’s. Paul was always there to lend a hand. His passion for music was inspiring.

Dear Susan, Kevin, and Katie,
Words fail me when I try to say how sorry and sad I am for the loss of your husband/father. Paul was supposed to live forever. He has been in the forefront and background of my life since Kevin and Sibyl were little, but especially as a beloved fellow musician in the BSO. Now I feel especially blessed to have been serving on the BSO Programming Committee with him since last year. It's been a treat to know him in this capacity, so calm and sensible even when the discussion would start to heat up. Thanks to our Musical Discussions I started paying more attention to wind instruments and so enjoyed Paul's tuba playing. And then there were his compositions where his creativity shined. It's been a privilege to have known him all these years. His memory will live on in me and in all those who had the good fortune to know him. Please accept my condolences, dear friends. I send you warm hugs and love.
