Jody Howard Deckard, 53, of Bloomington was born September 19, 1967 in Indianapolis, IN to Joseph P. Deckard and Betty L. (Kinser) Deckard.
Jody was a special person born with Down Syndrome and in his late 40’s lived with dementia. In 1993, at the age of 25, he moved into a group home owned by Options for Better Living which is now Life Designs, Inc. At the age of 40 he was able to buy his own home still with staff from Life Designs.
Jody loved everyone but also knew those who had difficulty in accepting him. He had several community jobs over the years but lastly worked at Stone Belt until his health prevented him from working.
Jody loved his family and family reunions, music, and sports (I.U. and the Colts). He was mischievous and loved to tease, especially his staff that were girls.
He is survived by his mother, Betty (Kinser) Deckard, brother, Michael (Laura) J. Deckard, two nieces, Mikayla L. Deckard and Madison L. Deckard, one nephew, Mitchell T. Deckard.
He was predeceased in death by his father, Joseph P. Deckard in 2017, his paternal grandparents, Howard and Gayle Deckard. His maternal grandparents, Riley and Maggie Kinser and several aunts and uncles.
A special thank you to his staff at Life Designs over the years and especially his current staff: Angela Jeffrey, Kelli Delaney, JoJo McKee, Jordan Maclain and Erin Thurston..
A graveside service will be 2:00pm January 8, 2021 at Valhalla Memory Gardens with Pastor Allen Ketchersid officiating. The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard is handling arrangements.
Donations in Jody’s memory can be made to Life Designs, 200 E. Winslow Rd., Bloomington, IN 47401 or Stone Belt, 2815 E. 10th St., Bloomington, IN 47408.

I was saddened to read about Jody’s recent passing. I have nothing but fond memories of my somewhat brief but memorable time spent with Jody. Back in the early-to-mid 2000’s I was asked by Tyler Ferguson of the Park’s Department to coach the adult Special Olympics basketball team. As a former high school coach I looked forward to having the opportunity to coach again and I was really excited to have the chance to do that with the Special Olympics basketball team. The previous coach Tom joined me and together we coached the team that included Jody as a key member. Coaching that team was truly the most rewarding experience I ever had coaching in my life. I so remember Jody’s love of sports, his enthusiasm as a member of the team, and his great sense of humor. He would get a mischievous look in his eye and I knew something funny was up. He was a key contributor to the fun and success of the team. Unfortunately, after two years Tyler left the Park’s Department and the person who replaced her changed the team schedule and would not adjust it to accommodate my schedule to allow me to continue coaching. That was a great disappointment. Still it was great to see Jody around town and see his big smile and greeting of “Coach Bruce.” Again, I am sorry for your loss. I will hold fond memories of Jody and how much I enjoyed knowing him.

God’s Peace,

Bruce Colston

Joe Tindal and Roy and Lucie Tindal send their prayers and thoughts to Jody's family. Our Joe also had Down Syndrome and he said "I loved Jody like a brother". They knew each other through Special Olympics Bowling, the Buddy Walk and other events through the years. We also knew his brother's family. We are good friends with Richard and Connie Headdy. Joe was very sad to learn of his passing but we to believe in Jesus and we will see him there. We will be grieving with you. Much love to all the family.

Jody was a great guy. I will always cherish the time we spent through options for a Better living. He was IU's biggest fan! My condolences to Jody's family and friends.

I was a neighbor of the Deckards. Betty and Joe entrusted me with their two precious sons on one of my first babysitting gigs. At that time, both boys were young but had a brotherly bond like no other. Jody would definitely challenge me on his designated bed time hour. The typical routine was that I would place both boys in their beds with Jody promptly locking me out and proceeding to rock on his rocking horse and sing. After my many soft pleas so as not to awaken Michael,Jody would finally tell me "ok" in his husky little voice, unlock the door, and let me in. He would jump into bed (usually with a grin on his face that he had accomplished getting to bed on his own terms) and that would be all. Sending my thoughts and prayers to you.
