Obituary

Carol Joan (Freeman) Bruce, 75 of Bloomington, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her loving husband and family on Monday, February 8, 2021 at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. Carol was born August 2, 1945 in Bloomington and was the daughter of Herschel and Oneta (Stephenson) Freeman. Carol lost her beloved Mother, Oneta, at a very young age, but was blessed with an incredibly wonderful and loving step-mother when Kathleen (Cassner) married her Father Herschel.

Carol was a 1963 graduate of Bloomington High School and worked as Office Manager and secretary to Larry Grubb and the Bloomington IGA stores for 25 years. Larry is quoted as saying that she ran his office as if it were her very own and that she was an integral part of the business success. She was later just as effective as a property manager for American Sunbelt Properties, Matlock Management, Varsity Villas Homeowners Association, and Millennium Properties. Carol was a natural at floral design and was owner of the floral shop, Bud’s and Branches, in Highland Village IGA on the Westside. Carol was also a master interior designer, and was often asked by friends and family to help with decor because of her design talent. She loved collecting pillows and tea towels, much to the chagrin of her husband Sonny, from all over the world. Carol was blessed with a loving family and with wonderful friends from high school that she treasured and still gathered with on a regular basis, playing Mahjong and taking antiquing trips. Carol was also a member of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church.

Carol is survived by her husband Paul “Sonny” Bruce; two sons, Perry (Sheila) Bruce, and Tracy (Joanna) Bruce; 4 grandchildren, Riley Bruce, Garrett Bruce, Griffin Bruce, and Ellie Bruce; two sisters, Kathleen ‘Kathy’ (George) Gossman, and Barbara Jo May; brother, Larry (Susan) Freeman; sister-in-law, Anna Dunning, two brothers-in-law, Bobby (Sue) Bruce, and Gary “Tub”(Nancy) Bruce, several nieces and nephews, and her rescue dog Buckley, whom she spoiled and adored.

Carol was preceded in death by her father and mother, Herschel and Oneta Freeman, step-mother, Kathleen Freeman; brother and sister in-law, Sonny and Pat Cassner; and two brothers-in-law, Fred May and George “Buddy” Bruce.

Due to Covid-19 a Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held for Carol when it is safe to gather with friends and family.

Memorial contributions for Carol may be given to: Wheeler Mission.

Tracy and Perry,
So sorry for your loss. We always enjoyed talking to your Mom when we would see her at the American Legion. She always had a smile. She will be missed. We will keep all of you in our prayers.

I thank God for bringing Carol into my life. I will miss her so. She was the sister I never had and really don’t know what to do with out her. Carol loved her Sonny so much, she was so so proud of her boys and their wife’s. She loved her grandkids and was so proud of each and everyone of them. She never stopped bragging about them and now they are going into their journey in life, just remember that she will always be looking down on you kids. I can’t say enough about her love for you all. I’m so sad for us all. She a special person and there’s not a day I won’t think about her. She always said we are all in Gods Hands and I know that she is in his arms wright now. Carol I love you and I’m praying for her wonderful family. See you again one day my friend ❤️❤️
