Obituary

David “Dave” James Dahlstrom was born on October 4, 1960 in Winnebago, MN, the son of James and Clara (Roche) Dahlstrom.

He graduated from Fairmont High School in 1979. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Notre Dame in 1983. He continued his education at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, where he graduated with a Master of Science in Geology in 1986. He worked as a computational hydrogeologist.

Dave is survived by his loving wife, Lori (Buntjer) of 36 years. They were married in Fairmont, Minnesota on July 28, 1984. Dave is lovingly remembered by his children, Michael (Alexandra) Dahlstrom of Saint Paul, MN and Nicole (Michael) Greim of Fort Wayne, IN.

Dave is preceded in death by his father, James Dahlstrom; his mother, Clara Dahlstrom; his mother-in-law, Donna Buntjer; and his brother-in-law, Robert Thompson.

Those that will cherish his memory include his step-mother, Marge Dahlstrom of Fairmont, MN; three sisters, Susan (Tom) Feda of Salt Lake City, UT, Mary (Jerry) Dahlstrom-Salic of Bloomington, IN, Karen Dahlstrom of Stillwater, MN; and one brother, Greg (Ruth) Dahlstrom-Afcha; cousins, nephews, nieces, a great nephew, great nieces, and countless other friends. Dave will be missed greatly by his cat Josie, his grand-pup Hank, and his grand-kittens Jessa and Shoshana.

Above all else, Dave cherished his time visiting with family and friends. He enjoyed cycling the scenic trails and hills of South-Central Indiana. Though Dave would never admit he was a collector, he enjoyed hiking in search of geodes and other rocks and minerals to add to his stock.

Dave passed away at IU Health Bloomington Hospital in the presence of family on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at the age of 60.

Dave’s family will receive friends on Saturday, February 13, 2021 from 11 am until 1 pm at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard. A private service will follow the visitation.

Due to Covid restrictions for the visitation we will only be able to have 25 people at a time in the building. We ask for your patience if there is a line.

Dave's service may be viewed starting at 1:00 pm on Saturday through The Funeral Chapel's Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/thefuneralchapel

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family prefers donations to be made in Dave’s honor to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bloomington. Donations can be made at https://bgcbloomington.org/donate/.

Dear Lori and family. Bieneke and I are very saddened by the loss of Dave. Dave and I shared a passion for groundwater science and I will always remember him as a fine colleague and good friend. Wishing you and your family peace, comfort and love through this time of sorrow.

Dear Family
I was just heart broken to learn from my brother Mike that we had lost our cousin David and it is even more sad that he was so young. I will be sending personal letters to you all but in the meantime please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. Cousin Patty

Deepest condolences to all of Dave's family and friends.

I feel lucky to have had Dave as a member of the "Geology Family" here at IU, where he worked for several years here in the Department of Geological Sciences (now Earth & Atmospheric Sciences). Dave joined our department to work with Professor Mark Person in the early 2000s. Though our research work did not directly overlap, Dave was a reliable member of our "4th floor lunch collective" where we shared brown-bag lunches almost every day, swapping stories of field work, bike rides, buggy computer codes, southern Indiana landscapes, and rock collecting--all punctuated by Dave's unflappable good humor. He will be missed by friends, colleagues, and students here at IU.

Our thoughts are with Dave's family and friends this week.

I was stunned to learn of Dave's death. He was a good friend while he worked with Mark Person in Geological Sciences. He was always such a cheerful person to be around with a lot of good stories. We shared a background few people have in the state of South Dakota. I also enjoyed having him as a student in a graduate class I taught in "Inverse Theory" . As in most things he was the best student in the class and helped pushed the rest of the class to a higher level. It is sad to realize we lost touch over these years. Reminds me why we should cherish each day and not put off connecting people who were important in our past. My sincere condolences to the entire family. The pain will decrease with time, but don't forget him. I certainly never will as long as I'm still above ground.
