Obituary

Rex Albert Bruce was born 9 July 1928 to Ben Bruce, Sr. and Arie Nilson Bruce. He passed away 23 March 2021. He was one of twelve children. Rex wrestled and played football at Bloomington High School, starting every football game his senior year. He married Norma Dyer upon his graduation in 1946. They were both seventeen. Their seventy-second anniversary preceded Norma’s passing. Two girls were born to that union, Polly and Pamela. After living in Bloomington, the young family moved to Crane Village where Rex could be closer to his work. From there, they moved to Bloomfield where the girls could attend and graduate from high school near their home. Rex retired from the Naval Weapons Support Center, Crane as supervisor over the power line crew and moved back to his home town of Bloomington.

Rex had a strong desire to trace his Scottish genealogy. In that pre-internet time he compiled data from many grave yards and history museums. Rex and four other Bruce men founded Bruce International in 1984 at Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina in the presence and with the approval of Andrew Bruce, the 11th Earl of Elgin and Chief of the Family Bruce. The organization, now named Family of Bruce International, remains active today with members in the United States and Canada.

At the time of his passing, Rex was a member and former Elder of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, honorary member of the Van Buren Fire Department having served on the Van Buren Township board for eight years, member of the Scottish Society of Greater Bloomington, and member of the Family of Bruce International.

Rex was preceded in death by his parents Ben and Arie Bruce; eight brothers: Oren, Garnet, Floyd, Lloyd, James, Ben Jr., Tod, and his twin brother Max; two sisters: Oneta Bruce Patton and Opal Bruce Miller; wife Norma, daughter Pamela Bruce Saulter, son-in-law Steve Saulter, and granddaughter Sarah Beth Tilford. Surviving are sister Nellie Bruce Long, daughter Polly Bruce Tilford, son-in-law John Tilford, grandchildren Aaron Tilford, Bruce Saulter, and Rebecca Saulter, and great grandchildren: Arissa North, Aiden Tharp, Jack Rex Saulter, Jolie Saulter, and Chase Tharp.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to all Rex’s care givers over the last few years, but especially to those in the emergency room and inpatient care of the Bloomington Hospital, IU Health Hospice, and Hearthstone Health Campus.

Services will be held at The Funeral Chapel, 3000 East 3rd Street, Bloomington on Friday, March 26, 2021. Visitation will be 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM with a Scottish themed funeral at 1:00 PM. Those attending are encouraged to wear Scottish attire. Rex attended many Scottish/American games and loved visiting other clans and family tent sites while wearing his Bruce tartan kilt.

The family requests memorial donations be made in the name of Rex Bruce to WildCare, Inc., 198 N. Hartstrait Rd. Bloomington, IN 47404; Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, 2700 E. Rogers Rd., Bloomington, IN 47401; Family of Bruce International, 1495 Jones Rd., Roswell, GA 30075 in lieu of flowers.

Due to Covid restrictions we are only able to have 25 people at a time in the building for visitation and 25 total people in the building for the services.

I was so sorry to hear that Rex had passed away. I'm sorry that we missed the visitation, we didn't find out until Friday evening. He & I had a lot of fun conversations over the years and some serious ones too. He was such a great guy and I knew he was always looking out for my mom and the neighborhood in general. I'm going to miss those talks with him and Halloween won't be the same either. He was someone that I've looked up to and have had a lot of respect for since I was a teenager and my grandparents lived across the street. He was always so good to my wife, mom and family too. The world needs more men like Rex and he will be missed tremendously by a lot of people. He certainly touched a lot of peoples lives by the way he lived his life.

Heaven gained another Angel yesterday..... I have so many wonderful memories at my Papaw and Mamaw's house. All the Christmas; birthday parties including some of my daughters early birthdays and of course Easter egg hunts. I always knew where Mamaw would hide the Easter bunny same place everywhere, in the bathroom behind the shower curtain. Regardless we always had a good time. We all love you Papaw I know you are finally home. Tell Dad , Mom , Mamaw , Sarah and all our loved ones I said I love them and miss them very much and I know we will all see each other again one day ....
