Obituary for John Francis Dyer

John Francis Dyer, age 80, of Bloomington, Indiana passed away at his residence on Wednesday, September 29, 2021. John was born on March 3, 1941 in Chicago, Illinois to Francis Patrick and Clara Vera (Schaffer) Dyer. John was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling, fishing, traveling, making and eating food, and playing board and card games, especially with his grandchildren. He loved telling stories and jokes. Because John was a clown, he had a love for them, especially Emmett Kelly. John liked old cars, especially his 1971 Cadillac Eldorado, that he restored. He was a big sports fan, but mainly had interest in the Chicago Bears and Cubs. John was a true saint. Most of all, John loved his family dearly and always put family first.
John graduated from Lake Geneva High School, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and then attended Thornton College. He worked for 47 years in the Elevator Industry: 37 years with Otis Elevator in Chicago, Milwaukee, and Des Moines, and ten years with Urban Elevator in Chicago. He was a member of Local 2: International Union of Elevator Constructors. John served eight years in the United States Army Reserve, and was a member of Little Union Baptist Church in Bloomington. He was a Master Mason for 38 years, Past Master, 1986-1987, at the Avalon Damascus Lodge 888. He was a member of the Building Code Committee for the City of Chicago under Mayor Harold Washing and Mayor Richard Daley in 2000.
John is survived by his wife, Beverly Ann (Martin) Dyer, children, Shelly Nelson Hayes, Becky Nelson Dickinson, and Brenda Nelson Donovan, stepchildren, Andrew Phillip Martin and Christopher Earl Martin, grandchildren, Ashley Gonzalez (Bernard), Meghan Mastine, Bradley Skoczylas, Justin Donovan (Lindsey), Alec Donovan, Michaela Hayes, and Katherine Hayes, step-grandchildren, Amber Woodall (Brent), Alyson Martin, Grant Martin, and Reed Martin, and great-grandchildren, Vera Mcdonald and Argus Swart.
John was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Kathleen Ann (Steliga) Dyer, and daughter, Mary Lynn Dyer.
Visitation for John will be from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third Street Bloomington, Indiana.
Visitation will also be held from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM on Friday, October 8, 2021 at Anderson Memorial Chapel, 606 Town Hall Drive Romeoville, Illinois. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, Illinois.
Funeral services will be held at Anderson Memorial Chapel.
