Gerald Lee “Jerry” Messel, 81 of Bloomington passed away on Saturday June 4, 2022 at his residence. Jerry was born December 28, 1940 in Bloomington and was the son of the late William T. and Hallie (Mallory) Messel.

Jerry was a 1958 graduate of Bloomington High School and then joined the Air Force where he spent 8 years and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the Air Force, Jerry began his 31 year career with the Bloomington Fire Department. Jerry enjoyed camping and spending time with his grandson Brody.

Jerry is survived by his daughter Jerri Goodwin and husband Robert III; sister, Marilynn Hawkins and husband Ronald Hawkins; and his grandson Airman 1st Class Brody Goodwin currently stationed at Malmstrom AFB.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Paul Messel.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2022 from 11 am until service time at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. Bloomington.

Services will be 1 pm Thursday, June 16, 2022 at The Funeral Chapel with Rev. Harold Godsey officiating. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens where the Monroe County Veteran’s Honor Guard will have military rites.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
