Obituary for James Edward "Jim" Bruce Jr.
James Edward “Jim” Bruce Jr., age 79, passed away peacefully at his residence surrounded by his loving family on August 9, 2022 after a 15 year battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Jim was born on March 2, 1943 in Bloomington, Indiana to James E. and Nora (Foster) Bruce.
Jim and his dad built 4 houses. Jim was in National Guard. He worked at Otis Elevator for over 35 years, the last 14 years being in the Tool & Die room. Jim and his wife owned Bruce Home Improvements, Inc. DBA Bruce Garage Doors for over 40 years, selling and installing garage doors, openers, and television and satellite systems. Jim also climbed over 100’ towers for the DNR and twice on a 600’ tower on Sare Rd. He worked for Al’s Two Way Radio installing communication antennas. Jim also enjoyed working on recreational vehicles, where he built 12’, 20’ and 24’ flat bed trailers with tilt and built a camper shell for a truck.
Jim loved deer hunting, camping, boating, water skiing, mushroom hunting, motorcycle riding and spending time with family. After retiring, he and Jo Anna spent winters in Melbourne Florida for 9 years. While in Florida, he enjoyed playing shuffleboard and bocce ball, and loved watching the ocean.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jo Anna (Grubb) Bruce; his three sons, John Edward Bruce (Dorshell), James Robert Bruce (Jenny) and Jason Lee Bruce; four granddaughters, Caitlan (Jed) Smith, Madison, Donica and Elyssa Bruce; four grandsons Joseph (Mae), Benjamin, Clayton (Katee) Bruce and Randy Harris; one great-granddaughter, Alivia Smith; four great-grandsons, Willis, Hunter and Ezra Smith, and Jennesse Harris; sister, Shirley Carrell (Jim); aunt, Nellie Long, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents James E. and Nora Bruce.
Visitation for Jim will be held on Friday, August 12, 2022 from 4 P.M. until 8 P.M. at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. Bloomington, IN. A private burial will follow at the family’s convenience.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hoosier Hills Food Bank.
