Obituary for Raymond "Ray" L. Baldwin
On the morning of August 10, 2022, Raymond L. Baldwin died peacefully in his home at the age of 84. Ray was born to Ruth and Oliver Baldwin in Dearborn, MI. Raymond was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving in Germany with the 6911th Radio Group, Mobile (USAFSS) from 1957 to 1960. After his Honorable Discharge, while attending Henry Ford Community College, Ray was hired by International Business Machines (IBM). He retired from IBM in 1989 as an Advisory Engineer in Essex Jct., VT. After being introduced through a blind date, he married Patricia (Pat) Ann Pombert on July 21, 1962. Ray and Pat celebrated their 60th wedding Anniversary this past July, loving one another with deep devotion and determination. Ray and Pat devotedly and lovingly raised their two children- son Jeff and daughter Lynn.
From an early age, Ray was intrigued by science and engineering. He secured his Amateur Radio Operators (W8QAP) license in 1952. He not only utilized this skill while serving in the Air Force but enjoyed the hobby all the days of his life. Ray was never afraid of a home improvement, repair, or renovation project due to the great mentoring he received from his grandfather Paul Drenske and father, Oliver Baldwin. Raymond, like his dad, earned his private pilot’s license and reveled in that accomplishment. He was awarded the Be Great Award from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Bloomington in 2010 for his outstanding volunteer service. Ray was a quiet man who loved his family fiercely, was always willing to jump in and help, and was always content to be in the background, supporting others and their dreams.
Ray is survived by his wife Pat of 60 years, his two children Jeff (Nancy) Baldwin and Lynn Baldwin, four granddaughters – MaryLynn Baldwin, Brette (Justin) Koontz, Kelsi and Carli Ramos, and one great granddaughter Pennington Koontz. He is also survived by his siblings, brother Loren (Christine) Baldwin, and two sisters, Sharon (Ken) Van Vliet, and Donna (Richard) Johnson, multiple nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Ruth Baldwin, and a younger brother, Kenneth Baldwin.
A Celebration of Life Open House will be held at the Lincoln St. Boys and Girls Club at 311 South Lincoln St. Bloomington, IN on Saturday Nov 12, 2022 from 2:00 to 5:00pm. All are welcome.

To honor Ray's legacy and passion for supporting children and youth, an endowment fund has been established in his honor at the Community Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County. The Ray Baldwin Camp Scholarship Fund will give children the opportunity to attend summer camp through the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bloomington, so they will be empowered to reach their fullest potential as caring, productive, and responsible citizens.
