Obituary for Bonnie "Joyce" (Newlin) Mabert

Bonnie ‘Joyce’ (Newlin) Mabert, 79, of Bloomington passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at home with family by her side. She was born in Indianapolis on January 30, 1943. Parents were Mildred (Kenyon) Newlin and Jason Newlin of Carmel (IN). She lived in Carmel until age 10, moving to West Lafayette (IN) with sister Judy Newlin-Sherwood (deceased) and brother Joe Newlin. Joyce graduated from West Lafyette High School (1961), received a BA from DePauw University (1965), followed by a MA from Syracuse University (1970). She taught in elementary and secondary schools for ten years before moving into fulltime mother and housewife activities.
Joyce married Vincent A. Mabert on February 14, 1976 in West Lafayette (IN) and raised a wonderful son J. Michael Mabert of Burlington (WI) and a caring daughter Christine E. Mabert-Ramage of Flagler Beach (FL). She was a loving wife, mother, and care giver, wanting to spend as much time as possible with family of Jennifer A. Kehl-Mabert (daughter-in-law), Hannah C. Mabert (granddaughter) and Landon J. Mabert (grandson) and Jayce T. Ramage (son-in-law).
Her main passion during earlier years of marriage was to follow and support her children. Michael was an accomplished saxophone player while in high school and college, and she attended dozens of his musical outings locally or far away. On the other hand, Christine was into softball and Joyce would cheer for her daughter during pleasant weather or a 95-degree heat wave.
Being married to Vince gave Joyce and the family many opportunities for wonderful experiences. For example, long summer break vacations in the Adirondacks helped avoid the hotter months in Indiana and provided enjoyable outdoor and water-based activities. Also, they lived twice in Maastricht, The Netherlands for six months, which became the base to explore Europe’s many treasures.
She had many interests and maintained an active life. Joyce quilted, did needle work, and collected fabric for many potential uses. As member of Bloomington Quilters Guild, she a was past president and assisted in many of the guild’s exhibits. She was a long-time member of Bloomington Friendship Star Quilting Bee, sharing great fellowship with other ladies.
Joyce loved playing bridge with friends, reading constantly, listening to music, enjoyed crossword challenges and puzzles, and Sunday comics. During her later years, travel and cruising the seven seas with her husband was a passion. She ultimately visited numerous countries on six of the seven continents (missing Antarctica) and 49 of the US states (missing Rhode Island). During these travels she collected over a thousand cookbooks focusing on local/ethnic cuisine.
As a member of several organizations like Delta Gamma sorority, she enjoyed the social and shared interests of friends. Joyce was a PEO member for over 50 years, attended local Chapter CR meetings, and was chapter president in 1996 when she inducted her daughter Christine into the society.
Joyce was loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed by all.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM on Sunday, September 11, 2022 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third Street Bloomington, Indiana. A celebration of life will follow.
Graveside services will be held at 11:30 AM on Monday, September 12, 2022 at Gray Friends Church Cemetery, 4810 E. 146th Street Noblesville, Indiana 46062.
