Obituary for Lauretta “Fern” Bingham-Cox

Born in Monroe County, Indiana on August 3, 1935 to Dowie Lorenza and Deborah Mae Gray. Lauretta “Fern” Bingham-Cox, age 87, of Bloomington, Indiana passed away in her hometown on Wednesday, November 30, 2022.
Although having no children of her own she loved teaching and shared this love with many.
As a member of the First Church of the Nazarene on Howe Street, Bloomington she taught Youth Sunday School classes and hosted many youth gatherings.
In her early adult years she worked for Westinghouse as an Administrative Assistant and later Dr. Bayless in Indianapolis.
Fern was driven and accomplished. She pursued and received a Bachelor, Master and a Doctorate degree in Education from Indiana University. She was a Professor at the IUPUI Kelley School of Business winning many Professional Excellence awards.
Speedway Sparkplugs students had the privilege and honor of her accolades for 20 plus years while teaching business classes, Driver’s Ed, and Coaching Tennis.
Her love of the arts prompted many years of layouts and designs of the beloved Speedway Yearbook.
As an entrepreneur, she thought outside the box and started three apparel businesses that became known nationwide. One for a licensed Collegiate boxer shorts company. With her last company she designed and Screen printed t-shirts for the Future Farmers of America and The National Honor Society amongst others.
She was grounded in her Christian Faith attending Speedway Baptist as her home church during her silver years.
Fern is survived by her sister, Irma Denney (Garry Prince), niece, Cheryl McKamey (Ron Bowlen), 6 Nephews, 2 nieces, step-daughter, Kristi Butner (Jerry),McKenna Copeland, Taylor Butner (Johnathan), Drew Butner(Brittney), Colby Snyder (Nate), Chance Butner, Cheryl May (Brian), Brandon May (Julia), Kaley May (Corie) Bonus daughter Denise Albrecht, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great nieces & great nephews.
Fern was preceded in death by her beloved first husband, Dwayne Bingham, and second adored husband, Kenneth Cox, her parents, and siblings, Margaret Edwards, Melvin Barrow, Gertrude Williams, Alice McGlaun, Juanita Simms.
Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM on Monday December 5, 2022 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third Street Bloomington, Indiana.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM at The Funeral Chapel, with burial to follow at Valhalla in Bloomington. Pastor Chad Bollhorst to officiate. Pallbearers will be Brandon Bollhorst, Stuart Barrow, Ron Bowlen, Jerry Joe Jo Butner, Brandon May, Dean Stoute, and Mike Stoute.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Heart Association in Fern’s name.
