Obituary for Sandra "Sandy" Apple

Sandra E. Apple, 82, of Bloomington passed away December 4, 2022 at her residence in Gentry Park (an assisted living facility).
Sandy was born in Bloomington, Indiana on January 3, 1940 the daughter of Robert Dale and Jennie Alice (Wise) Sylvester.
Sandy graduated Bloomington High School in 1957. Following graduation she married James L. Ferguson and raised 2 sons. She was a homemaker and worked part-time at IU as a secretary while her children were growing up. She belonged to a service sorority for many years, hosting and planning events. After the untimely death of her first husband, she eventually met up with and married a childhood neighbor Gilbert L Apple Jr. Together they raised 4 children; Lori, Mike, Rob and Rick. They were committed to attending any and all school events. They were avid sports fans. Sandy was always handy at making a last minute casserole dish to take to a sports banquet that the kids failed to tell her about! Sandy and Gib were always in the bleachers cheering for the football team while it was raining or snowing, and was always seen at the wrestling matches. It didn’t matter how far they had to drive. She kept a beautiful home, and was a fantastic cook. Eventually she took on full time work in the IU Faculty Records department. Sandy retired soon after her first grandson had arrived. From that point on she devoted her life to her kids and grandkids. Sandy and Gib loved going out for dinner with friends on Friday evenings and taking all the grandkids they could round up. She also had a green thumb. Everything she planted grew like crazy and she could tell you the name of the plants at a distance. Gib had a time keeping up with the demands of building new planter boxes. After the grandkids were well established they began taking “mini” trips around the country. Sandy and Gib loved to plan trips and write up a “trip report” for the family on the sites they saw and the food they ate. Sandy was very devoted to her friends and loved going to yard sales and antique malls. She was always passing out some “goodie” to a family member and bragging on how little she spent for it. She had an eye for a good bargain. She loved working puzzles, coloring adult coloring books, sudokus, reading books, playing cards and doing crafts. She loved decorating the house for the seasons especially Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. She was witty with a wonderful sense of humor, even in her final days surrounded by horrific pain; she always managed to say something funny.
Sandy is survived by her loving husband Gilbert Apple Jr., sons, Rick (Faye) Ferguson, Rob (Nancy) Ferguson both of Gosport, step-daughter Lori (John) McLane of Florida, and step-son Mike Apple of Bloomington.
She was preceded in death by her brother Dennis D. Sylvester and her parents Jennie and Dale Sylvester. She will be forever sadly missed by her family; 4 children, 10 grandchildren and growing number of great grandchildren.
Sandy’s wishes were to be cremated and there are no services planned. Inurnment is still being planned.
