Obituary for Gregory "Greg" Lloyd

Gregory Lee Lloyd, age 74, passed from this life December 19th, 2022 after a weekend spent surrounded by his loving family.
Greg was born September 11, 1948 to the late Richard (Dick) and Betty Jo Lloyd in Bloomington, Indiana. He was the second of four brothers and grew up riding his bike and playing in the shadow of Indiana University. He loved learning to build things and playing neighborhood baseball, and made his first paycheck delivering newspapers for several years to locals including the late Bill Cook.
Greg graduated from University High School in 1966. He got a part time job at what would later become TIS Bookstore, learning the business from his mentor, the late Jack Tichenor. He spent the next 49 years building a successful business by helping students to buy affordable used books, and developed respect and friendships among his associates, employees, and the community that have lasted a lifetime.
Greg was a member of Christ Community Church (formerly ECC) here in Bloomington, having come to trust Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. Greg was devoted to growing in Christ and loved reading and meditating on scripture, and belonged to a men’s Bible study group for many years. If you asked for prayer, you can trust that he honored that request.
A self-described curmudgeon, Greg had a way with words that both delighted and confused his audience. He had a lexicon all his own that he took pleasure in employing with his coworkers and employees and which became the stuff of legends at TIS and among his family and friends.
Never fond of children until he had his own, he not surprisingly threw himself into the role of father with abandon, raising his three children with love, honesty, humility and compassion and a strong work ethic. No request was too large or small, from flying around the globe to travel with his cash-poor college student child to driving cross country in the midst of “book rush” to rescue another child with car trouble, to building a makeshift outhouse in their neighborhood backyard.
He was unfailingly honest and loyal, was quick to laugh with you and even more quick to laugh at himself, and loved a good Beefeater gin and tonic.
He loved to be active and his only regret in retirement was that his illness caused him to be too fatigued to finish projects around his yard or volunteer with such organizations as Habitat for Humanity, as he had previously been able to do.
Greg is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife, Cindie, his children, Marianne (Ramiro) Hinojosa, Christopher Lloyd, and Rene (Wally) Ouedraogo, their mother Martha Philion, grandchildren Justine and Damien, his brother Timothy (Marcia) Lloyd, and his stepchildren Katie Minami, Nathan (Kelly) Wampler, Zachary Wampler, and Jacob (Loghan) Wampler, and grandchildren Alyssa, Leanna, Kai, and Amelia, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and their children
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Betty Jo Lloyd, and brothers Randy and Jeff Lloyd.
A celebration of Greg’s life will be held at Christ Community Church, 563 S High Street, Bloomington, IN on, Saturday, January 14th, 2023 at 1:00 p.m., followed by a 2 hour visitation to begin at 2:00 p.m.
All are welcome and the family hopes that those in attendance bring stories to share.
