Obituary for Kimberly "Kim" Geeslin

Kimberly Geeslin, 51, of Bloomington, passed away unexpectedly of complications from cancer treatment on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at home with her family. She was born May 13, 1971, in Stanford, California, the eldest child of William and Eileen Brown Geeslin, and grew up in New Hampshire. Kim was a graduate of Oyster River High School in Durham, New Hampshire; University of New Hampshire (B.A.); and University of Arizona (M.A. and Ph.D.).

Kim met her husband, Sean, on a college study abroad program in Granada, Spain. The Spanish language was one of the many interests they shared in their 30 years together.
Kim was a runner, a regular participant and fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity’s annual Women Build, a cross-country mom for daughter Hayden, and a hockey mom for son Logan.

A Professor of Spanish and Portuguese in the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University since arriving in Bloomington in 1999, Kim studied second language acquisition of Spanish. Her teaching garnered numerous awards, and she was beloved by hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students, many of whom she remained in contact with and collaborated with professionally.

Kim was an able, generous colleague, administrator, and mentor, and served as associate chair and interim chair in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, director of the program in Hispanic linguistics, associate vice provost of faculty and academic affairs, and since December, vice provost for faculty and academic affairs. She also served as director of the Initiative for the Advancement of Women Faculty.

The family is grateful for the outpouring of love and support from friends and colleagues in Bloomington and beyond. Kim will be missed as fiercely as she was loved.

Kim was preceded in death by her father William and father-in-law Clifford “Kippy” McGuire. Survivors include her husband Sean McGuire, children Logan and Hayden, sister Melissa Snodgrass, mother Eileen, and mother-in-law Patricia “Patty” McGuire.
