Obituary for Susan Gene Jones (Thompson)

Susan Gene (Thompson) Jones passed away on February 10, 2023 at IU Health Hospital from heart complications. Sue was born on May 12, 1942 in South Bend, Indiana to Eugene Perry Thompson and Miriam Marguerite (Shoup) Thompson. Sue attended Indiana University where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Arts in 1964 and her Masters in Library Science in 1965. While attending Indiana University she met her husband, Robert Delano “R.D.” Jones while working in the Tudor Room. Sue and RD were married on February 5, 1966. Sue worked as the Head Reference Librarian at the Monroe County Public Library while R.D. attended law school. After completing law school, RD was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas and the Pentagon during his active duty in the Army JAG Corps. During R.D.’s military service, Sue volunteered at several service organizations. Sue was also a member of Tri Kappa. Upon R.D.’s discharge, he and Sue returned to Bloomington, Indiana to raise their daughters. Sue worked as a Library Researcher at the Kinsey Institute for several years. After retirement, Sue enjoyed spending time with her many friends and her grandchildren and traveling with RD.

Sue is survived by her husband R.D., daughters, Julie Sue (Jones) Hansen, Andrea Lee (Jones) Arter (Chet), five grandchildren: Sarah, Ben, Amy, Eva and Chester; her siblings, David Thompson, William Thompson, and Janet (Thompson) Leazenby. Sue was preceded in death by her parents.

There will be no public funeral. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Bloomington Country Club on March 4th from 1pm to 4pm. The family encourages friends to join them to celebrate Sue’s life.
