Obituary for Kenneth "Kenny" Lee Stephens

Kenneth Lee Stephens, age 94, of Bloomington, began his walk, “beyond the river” on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at his home, peacefully passing this Easter Season from his earthly journey to a better shore.
Kenny, tender Husband, our Dad, and dear Friend left his earthly home, to join his Mom & Dad and many sisters, brother, and grandson Noah, in his heavenly home. Born into a large family on September 27, 1928 in the Monroe County lowlands of Salt Creek, where, as a teenager he moved about on horses capable of swimming the swollen creeks. Soldiering, he was in step, as a farmer, he was true to the land, dear as a father, while always kind as a neighbor. He was never one to utter an unpleasant tone, and always quick to listen. He was the son of John L. Stephens and Clara E. Polley. His military enlistment took him to countries far away, upon his honorable return, Kenny married Lucille Deckard on December 27, 1955, woven together they have shared a union of 67 years, filled with countless joys of celebration, sometimes enduring the overwhelming pain of life itself. Kenny enjoyed farming, horses, cattle and his many pet dogs over the years. Kenny’s love for family gatherings and spending time with his children and grandchildren was noticeably endless. The days of large families and parking lots filled with dust laden cars and trucks gathered into the reunion shelter houses have passed us by, but men like Kenny were ones for a young man to model himself unto. He knew how to pray, and often did. Whilst he is sadly missed, fondly remembered, it’s with great expectation that soon he will be rejoined by those that remain…
Kenny served his country in the armed forces in his early 20’s. He retired from RCA/G.E. after 30 plus years of employment. During his retirement yours he continued working on the farm. Kenny, while still physically able, attended the Ellettsville Assembly of God.
“Kenny”, is survived by his wife, Lucille Stephens and 5 children, daughters: Marilyn S. Deckard, husband Rick; Pamlyn K. Arthur, husband Jerry; Diane L. Smith husband Michael; Sheila G. Brock, husband Mike; and son Jerrell L. Stephens, wife Jennifer. His remains include 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother John Stephens, and sister Glodene Floyd.
The service to say “good bye, but only for now”, celebrating a life well-lived will be at the Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, E. 3000 3rd Street, Bloomington, Indiana on Wednesday April 12 at 11 AM with Rev. Don English officiating. Visitations will be held Tuesday evening April 11 from 4-7 PM and on Wednesday April 12 from 10-11 prior to the service. Flowers may be sent to the Funeral Chapel.
