Obituary for Leonard Martin "Marty" Sweet Jr.

Leonard Martin “Marty” Sweet Jr. passed away April 26, 2023. Marty was born September 2, 1936 in Lansing, Michigan but grew up in Bloomington and graduated from Bloomington High School. He was the son of Leonard and Rosalie Sweet.
Marty graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Electrical Engineering and then proudly served in the Air Force for 21 years. His main assignments were a radar navigator, instructor on B52’s, and participating in the 11-day war over Hanoi. Their plane was hit by SAMs and had to make an emergency landing in Thailand. He always credited his aircraft commander for saving his life. His last assignment was at NSA before moving back to Bloomington. He then worked in various positions in Bloomington including managing apartments, was a Trust Officer at Bank One, and a legal assistant at Andrews, Harrell, Mann Chapman and Coyne.
Marty was preceded in death by his parents and son, David. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his daughters, Natalie (Jon) Stavnheim, Joanna Hahn, and Susan (Kenneth) Wood; grandchildren, Austin Wood, Julia (Justin) Rutherford, Evan Stavnheim, Eric Stavnheim, Rachel Hahn, and Rebecca Hahn; and brother and sister-in-law Phillip and Akemi Sweet.
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 8, 2023 from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. Bloomington. Services will begin at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. Mary Beth Morgan officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens in Bloomington.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Marks United Methodist Church or to the Wounded Warriors Project.
