Obituary for William Donald "Don" Faris

William Donald Faris, 97, of Bloomington, passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at home surrounded by family. He was born April 20, 1926 in Monroe County. He was the son of Helen Maddox Faris and Farrie “Sixie” Faris.

Don graduated from Bloomington High School in 1944. He graduated from Kings Point United States merchant Marine Academy and served as an Ensign aboard the Loma Linda Victory Ship in Okinawa during World War II. He received a Victory Medal, Combat Bar with Stars, Pacific War Zone Medal, Honorable Service Button and a Presidential Testimonial Letter signed by President Harry S. Truman.

Don worked for Railway Express and then worked and retired from Wetterau. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Club and a member of the First United Church. Don loved to hunt, fish, and spend time with his family.

Don is survived by his wife Jean of 64 years; his daughters Gwen Staggs (Joe); Dawn Faris and Polly Tomlinson (Charlie); sons Pete Faris, Rick Faris (Lisa), and Marty Faris; 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother John Richard Faris, son Mike Faris, daughter Penny Elliot and great grandson, Deven Watters.

Visitation will be held at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 18, 2023, and from 9:00 A.M. until time of service on Friday. There will be a memorial service presented by the Elks Lodge at 6:00 P.M. on Thursday during visitation time. A funeral service will be held at 10 AM, Friday, May 19, 2023 at The Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Chambersville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Southern Care Hospice or The American Heart Assocation.
