Obituary for Vernita "Nita" Bowlen

After a fun filled Mother’s Day of lunch and time together as a family, Vernita “Nita” Bowlen, went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Sunday evening, May 14, 2023.
Nita was born October 2, 1934 in Spencer, Indiana and was the daughter of the late Luther and Mabel (Hamm) Elliott. She was a 1953 graduate of Bloomington High School and worked for many years for the Monroe County Community School Corporation having worked at Binford, Rogers and retired from Batchelor. Nita was a member of Liberty Church of Christ and had also attended Highland Village Church of Christ. She was the ultimate Team Mom supporting her boys in all of their sports and activities, and enjoyed her time with family- especially her grandchildren.
Nita married John “Jack” Bowlen on April 14, 1956 and together they shared 67 years of marriage. Jack survives along with their 4 boys and their wives; Eddie and Brenda, Doug and Terina, Eric and Lori, and Bradley and Shelley. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren; sisters, Jane (Herman) Chamberlin, Betty Messel and Joy (Dennis) Heller; and her sister-in-law Bess Elliott.
Nita was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Vivian Peterman; brother Vernon Elliott; brothers-in-law, Paul Messel, Frank Peterman and Carl Bradley
Visitation for Nita will be Thursday, May 18, 2023 from 6-8 pm at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, Bloomington. Visitation will continue on Friday, May 19, 2023 from 11 am until service time at Liberty Church of Christ, 12284 E. McVille Road, Solsberry, IN 47459.
Services for Nita will be 12 PM Friday at Liberty Church of Christ. Burial will follow at Liberty Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Nita’s memory to Liberty Church of Christ or Liberty Cemetery Fund.
