Obituary for Cecilia Schuman

Cecilia Ann Schuman, formerly of Hobart, IN passed away on May 17, 2023, at the age of 83.
After months of failing health, she died peacefully at Indiana University Health Hospice House in
Bloomington, IN, surrounded by her children.
Born September 24, 1939, in Washington, DC, Cecilia “Ceci” Schuman was the oldest of four
children born to Ruth Elizabeth (Liberko) and Elton George Going. At the time of her birth, her
parents both worked for the Civil Service.
When Ceci was three years old, her family moved to Collinsville, a small town located in
southwestern Illinois. When she was five, they moved to neighboring Glen Carbon, the town
where her father grew up. Ceci graduated from Edwardsville High School and studied for one
year at Springfield Jr. College near Springfield, IL, where she met her first husband. Ceci and
former spouse, James L. Hibberd had five children together. While they both went on to
remarry, their families remained closely connected throughout their lives.
In 1971, Ceci married Dennis J. Schuman at Hobart Presbyterian Church. That union resulted in
the birth of her sixth child, Julie Anne.
Ceci held a wide variety of positions over the years, including babysitter, cook, waitress, retail
sales, bank teller, student supervisor at Hobart High School and teachers’ aide. Her last position
was secretary and receptionist for day care ministry at South Lake Worship Center. While her
job as an accounting clerk for Prudential Insurance was her favorite, Ceci was always happiest
being a wife, mother, and homemaker. Ceci was active in the Hobart Jaycees and served a term
as president. Ceci and Dennis were also active members of Augustana Lutheran Church and the
Maria Reiner Center in Hobart.
Cecilia is preceded in death by her parents, Elton and Ruth Going and her husband, Dennis J.
Schuman.
