Obituary for Winona Garmhausen

Winona Marie (Stewart) Garmhausen passed away June 3, 2023 in Bloomington, IN. She was born January 21, 1930 to Frederick and Viola Kunz in Ft. Wayne, IN. Her death followed more than a decade of struggles with Parkinson's Disease. Her strength of purpose was to give courage to other patients.
Winona was a lifelong watercolorist, published historian and arts educator. Her special interest focused on Native American art and education. As a consequence, she spent 30 years working with Native Americans in the Southwest before relocating to Bloomington in 1998. She held a PhD in American Studies from University of New Mexico and a Master of Fine Arts from Bowling Green State University of Ohio.
Winona is survived by four children: Jacqueline (James) Eyster, Bloomington; Jeffrey (Anita) Stewart, Warren, IN; Jan (Michael) Lamm, Bloomington; and Jill (Ivan) Aguilar, Santa Fe, NM, along with 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
There will be no public viewing. A private family service will be held and her final resting place is at Valhalla Cemetery, Bloomington, IN. To celebrate her life, Winona requested that art supplies be donated to a local elementary school in her name.
