Obituary for Donald Gene Funkhouser

Donald Gene Funkhouser was born on October16, 1936 to Glenn and Sadie (Riggs) Funkhouser in Bloomington, Indiana, where he resided his 87 years. He was proud to say that six generations were raised on that same farm on Airport Road. He was preceded in death by his parents; five siblings, brothers, Lonnie (Ilene), Bob (Catherine), Jack (Erma and Annabelle); sisters, Mildred (first husband, Leon and recent husband, Wayne) and Betty (Joe) Hamm.
Special nephew, Jerry whom he missed dearly, as well as other nieces, nephews, and cousins he was close to.
A successful entrepreneur, Don built several businesses including; Funkhouser Beef Feeder Farms, Donald Funkhouser Excavating, Air Drilling Inc., D & R Crushed Stone, The Gathering General Store, D & D Welding, and Funkhouser Rentals.
Don loved people, which prompted him to build a business close to the family farm. The Gathering Country Music Hall was a place where he enjoyed the company of many old and new friends. Don served in the Army National Guard and was a youth leader at both, Garrison Chapel Church and Free Methodist Church. He also proudly served as Monroe County Fair Board President in the past.
Don is survived by son, Roger (Naomi) Funkhouser, granddaughters, Katelyn, Caroline and Lizbeth; daughter, Lisa (Steve) Barnes, grandson, Laramie (Lilia) Green, granddaughter, Lanae (Ian) Cage, and great-grandchildren, Gannon, Hunter and Ivy Cage. Don is also survived by his former wife, Rosalee Funkhouser and his long time companion, Sue Mitchell. Our family would like to acknowledge long time friend and in recent years, caregiver, David Ward, for his many years of support and dedicated service to our whole family, but especially to our dad.
