Shelli Kaye Washel, 53, of Bloomington passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Shelli was born February 12, 1966 in Sioux Falls, SD and was the daughter of Roger Shogren and Karen (Gustad) Swangel. She was a 1984 graduate of Cedar Falls High School and received her bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa.
Shelli had worked for the past 15 years at Peoples State Bank where she was a Mortgage Loan Officer. Shelli loved her work family and her clients and enjoyed helping others through the bank. She had previously worked at Indiana University as the Women's Sports Information Director from 1993-2001 and she spent a year with the City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department. Shelli enjoyed golfing and biking, she was active with the Habitat for Humanity Women's Build and was a member of the South Central Indiana Mortgage Bankers Association and Sherwood Oaks Christian Church. However she found her greatest joy and fulfillment in that of the role of mother to her son, Brady.
Shelli is survived by her son, Brady Washel; step daughter, Kailey Washel; father and step mother, Roger and Joyce Shogren; mother and step father, Karen and Jarold Swangel; 3 sisters, Lana Shogren, Tiffany Weber and Tricia (Shawn) Smith; nieces and nephews, Caden, Conner, Annika, Carley, and Kiera; and her extended family and a special group of high school friends. The family would especially like to thank her friend Martina Chance and neighbors Mark and Kim Wood for all of their love and support during Shelli's illness.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Elner and Berniece Shogren and maternal grandparents, Ben and Adena Gustad.
The Memorial Service will be 2:30 pm Thursday, June 27, 2019 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard 3000 E. Third St. Bloomington. Burial will follow at Clear Creek Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 12:00 pm until service time at The Funeral Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to The Funeral Chapel for the family to distribute between a trust for her son, Brady, and to fund research for Leiomyosarcoma
